Sich selbst bezeichnen die vier Schweden von Tengil als „quasi-symphonic post-hardcore“-Band. Das mag schon stimmen, jedoch steckt hinter ihrem Debut-Album Six mehr als nur diese zugegebenermaßen ungewöhnliche Genreschublade.

Posthardcore-Bands gibt es heutzutage bekanntermaßen wie Sand am Meer, und mit wenig überraschenden und vorgekauten Genre-Klischees in der Menge unterzugehen ist nicht sonderlich schwer. Im Falle von Tengil kann das aber nicht passieren, denn die Band hat es anscheinend nicht so mit versteiften Grenzen; man setzt eher auf kreative Vielseitigkeit, und statt in Schubladen zu denken, werden diese auf dem Tisch ausgeleert und der Inhalt auf kurzweilige und unvorhersehbare Art und Weise neu zusammengesetzt.

Bei diesem sechs Songs und gut eine Stunde langen Album macht der kurze Instrumental-Opener Fermeture den Anfang. Mit noisigen Gitarren und viel Feedback zeigt man sich von der shoegazigen Seite, weniger jedoch in Richtung des traditionellen Sounds, sondern eher mit einer Ästhetik, die an aktuelle Blackgaze-Bands wie Wolves in The Throne Room erinnert. Ohne Vorwarnung folgt auf diesen düsteren Einstieg der nächste Song, A Box, der nun mit treibendem Schlagzeug und kehligem Gesang die tatsächliche Postcore-Seite der Band zeigt. Spätestens jetzt sollte auch klar sein, dass auf dieser Platte ein Auf und Ab der Intensitäten zu erwarten ist, denn hier reihen sich lange und minimalistische, fast schon monotone Postrock-Parts an die kurzen und heftigen Momente, gefolgt von epischen Zwischenspielen, die dann auch die Selbstbeschreibung des „quasi-symphonic post-hardcore“ erklären dürften. Man lässt mächtig verzerrte Akkorde hallig ausklingen, eine Lead-Gitarre setzt mit hypnotischen Melodien ein, und das Schlagzeug hebt in Half-Time alles ins unermesslich Epische, nur damit eine brutale Zäsur alles verstummen lässt und eine trockene kleine Gitarre monoton dahindudelt, bis die Instrumentierung langsam wieder einsetzt und anschwillt, um nach einer gefühlten Ewigkeit zum Ende hin leise auszuklingen: Das ganze Album ist randvoll mit solchen Spannungsbögen, die eine ganz eigene Dramaturgie kreieren. Verstärkt wird diese durch die Songtexte, die Geschichten über Sehnsucht, Einsamkeit und Hoffnung erzählen, oftmals nihilistisch angehaucht, und auch immer so abwechslungsreich wie die Songs selbst: Es wird auf englisch und schwedisch gesungen und geschrien, und selbst Spoken Word-Teile finden hier ihren Platz.

Ein wahrlich symphonisch zusammengesetztes Debüt ist es also für Tengil geworden, das weit über Genre-Grenzen hinausgeht und trotz (oder gerade wegen) der kontrastreichen Parts und Umbrüche ein in sich geschlossenes Werk ist. Solch eine Dynamik von laut und leise, komplex und minimalistisch, atmosphärisch und trocken kann fantastische Geschichten erzählen, und im Fall von Six ist es eine Geschichte, die immer wieder mit ihrer Intensität beeindruckt, egal wie oft man sie schon gehört hat.

Hailing from Tilburg, The Netherlands, IZAH takes elements of sludge, noise, hardcore and post-rock and blends these into a dark and gloomy mix of heavy riffs, downhearted melodics and densely layered sound dynamics. After having released two EP’s, IZAH played numerous shows with the likes of Baroness, Mono, Cult of Luna, Celeste, Wolves in the Throne Room and The Ocean.

In 2015 IZAH released their debut album Sistere with an album presentation at Roadburn Festival. Sistere, for which the band joined forces with producer Jochem Jacobs (ex-Textures), has become a heartfelt 72 minute long musical narration through darkness and light, hope and despair. In four heavy atmospheric compositions IZAH takes the listener from serene post-rock passages to crushing hardcore grooves, from dark ambient to free form noise and from hypnotising black metal to massive walls of sludge.

In the middle of the day IZAH delivered one of the best performances of Roadburn 2015. For those who were not there, I can only tell them to get their hands on IZAH’s debut album ‘Sistere’ as soon as possible, for the mix of atmospheric sludge, post-hardcore, post-rock and doom is breathtakingly good and of international stature.
