Sufi-Poesie im Hier und Jetzt: Auf ihrem Debüt „Bird Under Water“ verbindet Arooj Aftab sensible Jazzklänge mit der Virtuosität westlicher wie östlicher Klassik, Kontrabass und Schlagzeug mit Sitar und Bansuri. Arooj Aftab is an NYC based Pakistani female vocalist, composer and music producer. Arooj has spent the last few years developing a new genre in world music. Naming it Neo-Sufi, Arooj has created a sound that culminates the energy and sensibilities of jazz upright bass, inverted chords and modal scales, americana acoustic folk guitar, south asian ancestral vocal melodies and lastly, sufi/mystic poetry from the 13th century and beyond. Her creative sensibilities have ensured the success of many projects at leading media institutions such as MTV, VICE Media and most recently Conde Nast Entertainment. Her recently released debut album \'Bird Under Water\' is quickly catching the attention of indie bloggers, major music publications and countless fans across the globe.
In 2011, NPR listed Arooj as one of the top young 100 composers of today, alongside names such as grammy award winning Esperanza Spalding and Fusion Jazz piano virtuoso Vijay Iyer. The New York Times included Arooj in their list of Best Concerts of 2012. TimeOut Magazine rated one of her collaborative projects in the Top 10 Classical Albums of 2013. Most recently, Curious Animal Magazine has rated her album Bird Under Water the 10 best albums among Bjork, Sufjan Stevens and Kendrick Lamar.
