Wenn ich am Klavier sitze fügt sich alles zusammen. Mit der Gitarre in der Hand ist es, wie mich durch hohe Wellen zu schlagen, eine Fahrt auf holprigen Straßen. Ich benutze ein Loop Pedal, das versucht einzurahmen und zu beruhigen. Aber Singen ist Klarheit und Seelenruhe, das kommt von einem anderen Ort in mir.

Es ist der Moment zwischen dem Ausklingen des letzten Akkords und dem Einsetzen des Applauses, dem ich nun seit einiger Zeit mein Equipment hinterher schleppe. Egal in welchem Club, in welcher Bar oder in wessen Wohnzimmer ich meine Lieder bisher gespielt habe, ich mache es für diesen Augenblick.

TULA ist eine fünf-köpfige Post-Folk Kollektive aus Schweden, die seit einigen Jahren in Berlin lebt. Ihre mit Klavier, Schlagzeug, Glockenspiel, Bass und Gitarre wunderbar zart orchestrierte Musik versetzt in eine traumhafte, leicht psychedelisch wirkende Welt und lässt nicht mehr los. Damit wir uns nicht falsch verstehen: TULAs hypnotische Musik ist immer für überraschungen gut und keineswegs aus Feenstaub gemacht. Es sind eindringliche und ergreifende Songs mit der einzigartigen Stimme von Fanny Risberg. Fanny ist eine in Schweden bekannte Schauspielerin, was ein Grund sein mag, warum die Band vor einigen Jahren nach Berlin zog.

Aufgenommen wurden die ersten Songs von Cameron Miller (Badly Drawn Boy, Emilliana Torrini, Adrian Crowley) in dessen Londoner Studio.

Auf alt-Schwedisch bedeutet das Wort "Tula" das Wandern weit in den Wald hinein. Es ist tatsächlich eine passende Namens-Wahl für diese Band, deren zarte, körnige und folk-inspirierte Songs an die dunklen Wälder Schwedens erinnern. Tula kommen aus der schwedischen Insel-Region Gotland. Auf den ersten beiden Singles der Band ist ein reiches, melancholisches Gefühl zu spüren, das eine ganz starke, aber gar nicht kitschige oder gar esoterische Naturverbundenheit offenbart. Wer in den Bann von Taken By Trees geraten ist, dem wird es bei TULA nicht anders ergehen.

"From Sweden comes Tula, which means something like 'to wander far into the forest' and its basically a female singer from the folk tradition. Very sparse on the music side, with just a bit of electric piano, some guitar, a slow bang on the reduced drum kit and Tula's voice on top, sometimes double tracked. Dream pop, absolutely folk like and reminding me of This Mortal Coil, especially on 'Don't Say A Word'. The b-side has two shorter pieces, oh too short pieces of more melancholia, and with 'Tula' even with a poisonous rhythm. Too short, but that's life. Sad but true. Tula meanders through the A-side, 'No Name', with sweet voice and acoustic guitar, while the melody builds, never erupting, but carrying your emotions on a plateau. The B-side 'Remind Me' evokes early 4AD records, funny, as I'd only just played 'Blood' by This Mortal Coil a few days previously, and this song reminds me of that feeling I first had when hearing Liz Fraser and Lisa Gerrard with This Mortal Coil and their own early projects. Tula keep their folk stance firm, but that feeling of being lifted to a higher emotional plain oozes through with every forlorn note and sorrowful melody. Bitter sweet and emotionally captivating.
