Raphaël Vanoli (D/F): electric guitar, casio, loops, analogue electronics, drum and guitar dubs
Gerri Jäger (A): drums, percussion, loops, dubs
KNALPOT hails from the fertile music pastures of Amsterdam, formed by Raphaël Vanoli and Gerri Jäger in october 2007. Both musicians are unmistakably rooted in rock music, experienced in many musical genres and are reputable musicians from the vibrating Amsterdam music scene. On drums Gerri Jäger, known from extensively touring avant-funk band Brown vs Brown. Jäger extended his instrument with a set of signature percussion (chains, milk-foamer) and an effectbox for dubs and loops. Raphael Vanoli is a guitarist working in the fields of jazz, rock, electronic and contemporary classical music. He plays a setup of analogue effect boxes, loopers, using many prepared guitar techniques and partly plays guitar with his left hand and a casio toy keyboard his right one. Despite all technological trickery every KNALPOT tune is performed 100% live - no laptops are
used.
KNALPOT's music is a fresh original experience consisting of minimal songstructures, low fuzz riffs, stumbling grooves, clouds of chirps and swirls, tranquility and sonic noise parts. Their self-proclaimed rascal style has a modernizing combo sound that is reminiscent of 80's computer game aesthetics, a taste of the sound of London's WARP label and is played with Led Zeppelin rock
attitude."
KNALPOT has been touring in The Netherlands, Belgium, UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Serbia, Slowakia and Slovenia several times. Some Highlights: participation on EXIT (Novi Sad, Serbia) and LOWLANDS Festival in 2009, State X New Forms, Rotterdam Jazz International, Eurosonic/Noorderslag 2010, International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Debute Release SERIOUS OUTTAKES on Eat Concrete (Rushhour distribution) in October 2009.

Guitar, electronics, drums and an immense dose of energy" (Stream Magazine) "Despite their limited number, they manage to sound like a bastard hybrid of a load of Rune Grammofon and Warp bands - the skronk of Supersilent, the punk of MoHa, the mathematics of Battles, and the electronic of Pivot." (Scott McMillan) "With a freshness that summons up a sunny-day-stoned Can or a jazz quartet freed from a dictatorial star player, Knalpot are onto something." (Freenoise)
Reviews:
"KNALPOT stands for development, inventiveness, acuteness and vitality. What else do you wish to get from music?" (Tim Sprangers, review of the concert at Rotterdam Jazz International 27.09.2009. http://www.jazzenzo.nl )
"In the upstairs hall of Paradiso: Knalpot put an impressive and screaming end to this year's dutch input at the `Night of the Unexpected'. Full of liveliness and dedication, with heads facing each other - the drummer and guitarist brought a smashing avalanche of dub, noise, rock, drum'bass and jazz that is unprecedented untill now. Murdering rhythms and crashing bass while alternating between the subtle and the raw. The cherry on the pie."
Arjan van Sorge/Fret Magazine on "The Night of the Unexpected", Paradiso Amsterdam 09/11/2009
"The most exceptional band of the festival surely was Knalpot, consisting of two experimenters of sonic worlds: Raphael Vanoli (guitar and electronics) and Gerri Jäger (drums). You have to admit it takes a while untill you get into their music and it isn't easy to find the right words to describe it. However, behind their sonic turbulences and the ongoing electronic performance refined listening experiences were hidden. On the one hand there were those futuristic volcano eruptions of sound, the next moment the duo drove you into a breathtaking trance. Almost dreadful psychedelia.
It is really thrilling and fine to see that such courageous pioneers exist."

"Knalpot are a hyper-energetic Dutch two piece - Gerri Jager on drums, and Raphael
Vanoli on guitar and electronics. Despite their limited number, they manage to sound like a bastard hybrid of a load of Rune Grammofon and Warp bands - the skronk of Supersilent, the punk of MoHa, the mathematics of Battles, and the electronic of Pivot. Their set began with drilling noises and drone mutating into jazzy post-rock rhythms, before the drummer started slapping his kit with chains as the guitarist spat out bursts of noise, the two coalescing in spasmodic rhythmic fits. AFX acid electronics and casio burble were equally at home among the grooves. Speaking of which, the pair pulled their woolly hats down over their eyes and fell into a ridiculous monster of a groove for the finale, like the locked groove of This Heat's "Health and Efficiency", somehow managing to end in sync, and to huge applause from the Bimhuis crowd. Knalpot are ones to watch, no doubt."

"At a push it'd be possible to squeeze Knalpot into the punkfunkelectro bag, but the seams wouldn't hold the duo for long. Sounding a lot more organic than other similarly tooled outfits, their music is stuffed with loops, blips and Mulder melodies. With the fat Casio bass lines, live drums and a guitar that moves between riffs and wondering, this dipped duo effortlessly slip between sonic approaches. With a freshness that summons up a sunny-day-stoned Can or a jazz quartet freed from a dictatorial star player, Knalpot are onto something."
Scott McKeating, ROCK-A-ROLLA issue 15, july 2008
"... this mind-blowing number fell on the doormat. It's an awesome little pile driver of a recording by an ferocious and insane duo. It smells entirely of the avant and beautifully fucked up world that is past, present and future Amsterdam, that jewel of (and hope for) contemporary Western culture. It's fun, it's heavy, it's tight, it's colourful and very original, in fact almost indescribable. Check out the website text rather than mine... it's all true."
