Experimental act Wreck and Reference was formed in 2011 by multi-instrumentalists Ignat Frege and Felix Skinner. Using live drums, computers, and vocals, the duo quickly arrived at their unique and unnerving sound. Although heavy and abrasive, Wreck and Reference moves comfortably outside the circumference of traditional genres on their own tangential path.

To date, Wreck and Reference have released three full-length albums and two EPs. Their first release, an EP titled Black Cassette, showcased the blown-out intensity of black metal and the angularity of noise rock, with themes of determinism and Cormac McCarthy-esque isolation. Their debut full length Y̶o̶u̶t̶h̶ (2012) and their sophomore release Want (2014), described by Pitchfork as having “radical vision” and “boundless experimentation,” represented dramatic expansions of their sonic palette.

In 2016 Wreck and Reference released their third LP, Indifferent Rivers Romance End. Considered by many to be their definitive album, Indifferent Rivers saw Wreck and Reference perfect their song craft and push their noisy, sample-based instrumentation to its limits.

The band recently performed at the Tate Modern museum in London during Wolfgang Tillmans’ photography exhibition, as a part of his light, audio, and live performance installation. Wreck and Reference have toured the U.S. and E.U. extensively and performed alongside a diverse array of musicians including Deafheaven, Frog Eyes, Youth Code, Odonis Odonis, Liturgy, Earth, Kemba, and Guardian Alien.
