Halma

Founded in 2000, HALMA quickly abandoned conventional song structures in order to follow loop-like paths inspired by electronica. With a classical rock line-up (guitars, bass, drums), the band develops their music from improvisations: In the flow of playing, musical themes emerge, which form the building blocks for the composition of the later songs. Halma transfer mechanisms of electronic music into an analogue band structure.

Halma on the Stubnitz. What is that? Sound, tones, music. As the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, the grey coloration of the pupil invalidates the value of the light - now it's the sound that counts! The sound! Slower than light: 343.2 meters per second as opposed to 299,792 kilometers per second - a disadvantage? Not at all! Because we only really perceive the slow waves, the air waves, the sound waves - as perception! Wafting and floating, flying and lying down, gliding in expanses, diving in heights and climbing in depths - that's what Halma does.

Aidan Baker

Aidan Baker is a classically-trained multi-instrumentalist focusing on the electric guitar as his primary instrument. Using prepared and alternate methods of playing the guitar, along with various electronic effects, Baker creates music which generally falls within the ambient/experimental genre but draws on influences from post-rock, shoegaze, slowcore, ambient, electronica, neo-classical, and jazz.

A highly prolific artist, Baker has released numerous recorded works, both solo and with various group projects —most notably his dreamsludge duo Nadja, Hypnodrone Ensemble, WErL — and including collaborations with Tim Hecker, Carla Bozulich, Jussi Lehtisalo, and Andrea Belfi, among others, on such independent labels as Karlrecords, Gizeh Records, Important Records, and his own imprint, Broken Spine Productions. A frequent live performer, Baker has toured extensively around the world, including appearances at such international festivals as FIMAV, SXSW, Incubate, Unsound, Roadburn, and Mutek.

Originally from Toronto, Canada, Baker currently resides in Berlin, Germany.

“Aidan Baker has the power to deliver music with an exceptional cathartic power; he guides us in our inner world which is full of resources we often forget as we are too busy following the rhythm of the big cities we live in...Gizeh Records [has] offered us a recipe to overcome the stress of the challenging condition of the lockdown by releasing two beautiful, unique, long-form, contemporary classical pieces, written by Aidan Baker and performed by two different orchestras in Poland and Latvia. Such a good way to escape the external world and rediscover our inner space.” - Echoes & Dust
