MUSIC AND DANCE
Music and dance have always gone hand in hand in Africa, but unfortunately when represented internationally, the two often get disentangled. With this project we want to re-contextualize the music through its dance element, and take it a step further by involving contemporary dancers and choreographers to create new modern interpretations to the music from the project.

The first phase of the project took place in Uganda around the Nyege Nyege Festival 2022 with residencies before and after the festival as well as artists’ shows and debates at the festival. Further phases will take place in 2023 in Germany at the CTM festival in Berlin, two residency phases at MS Stubnitz in Hamburg, at Festsaal Kreuzberg for the closing Afropollination event in June 2023 and with a partnership with Cosmo Radio (Cologne).

MICHAELBRAILEY

MICHAELBRAILEY is an electronic musician working between sound and performance. His work has been described as “soul-bearing” (Martyn Pepperell, Dazed), “a virtual condensation process transmuting love across the heart-tech interface” (Gabe Meier, APR) and “like James Blake if he was actually any good” (Boomkat). He is a resident DJ on Hamburg’s Hallo: Radio and has been a special guest on NTS radio shows from aya, ZULI and Castles in the Sky. He also curates Manchester event series VIRTUALLYREALITY, whose 2021 online series saw newly-commissioned work leap out of the screen and into IRL life at Berlin’s Atonal Festival and Den Haag’s Rewire.

Sisso x Maiko x Zai x Nana

Sisso
Tanzania, producer:
Sisso’s productions epitomize Singeli’s hyperlocal scenius, distilling the vitality and struggle of life of the fringes of the Swahili-speaking world’s most populous city, into a unique music which seems to reflect the idea of keeping a cool head in frenetic situations. Between his ratchet rhythms and pitched-up melodies there’s a sublime, unresolved tension at play, where the music feels to accelerate so fast that dancers are gliding, sustaining a breathlessly “up” effect that uncannily recalls mid ’90s UK happy hardcore as much as Chicago footwork, Caribbean Soca, and Shangaan disco, yet with a psychotomimetic appeal all of its own.

Maiko
Tanzania, producer:
Born in the sprawling working class neighborhoods of Tandale and Manzese, Singeli’s signature sound consists of fast paced frantic loops interlocking with each other, with influences from Zanzibars Tarab music all the way to South African afro-house coupled with mc’s who often spit satirical lyrics about the challenges facing Tanzania’s youth, from police corruption to the complications of dating girls when you are broke. If there is one studio that stands out amongst the hundreds that dot Dar es Salaam’s musical landscape it is SISSO RECORDS. Centered around producers; Bwax, Sisso, Bampa Pana and Yung Keyz Morento and Mc’s Dogo Niga and Makavelli, they were early pioneers of the Singeli sound.

Jay Mitta x Zai x Nana

JAY MITTA
Tanzania, producer

Jay Mitta is one of the core producers of Sisso Studios in Dar es Salaam, a collective responsible for popularising Singeli, a frenetic strain of underground Tanzanian dance music which often exceeds 200 bpm.
He innovates with the singeli genre that's bubbled out of the ghettos of the Tanzanian capital. In his 2017 feature on the Nyege Nyege collective, RA's Aaron Coultate described singeli as bearing some resemblance to 'kuduro, shangaan electro and even gabber,' its sped-up rhythms constructed on second-hand Casio keyboards. Mitta's unique take on the genre also acts as an introduction to a rising singeli MC, 14-year-old Dogo Janja.
His take on the genre is more polished and cheerful than other members of the community. As heard on his debut album for Nyege Nyege Tapes, Tatizo Pesa, Mitta’s beats have a slightly less frenetic character, if you can say so about music that makes footwork feel like downtempo.
