Upstream #1 – Laurie Tompkins, Neil Luck, Nina Kuttler + Louis d'Heudières, Nika Son

Upstream is a concert series that brings new, forward-thinking, uncompromising music and performance from around the world to Hamburg. Using the metaphor of ‘upstream’ to reference being closer to the source, and also salmon, which swim upstream to migrate, it is focused on charting the latest currents and tackling contemporary themes in art and music.

Upstream #1 features Laurie Tompkins, Neil Luck, Nina Kuttler, Louis d'Heudières

Nika Son

Nika Son
works as a musician, artist, film composer, DJ and curator.
Her compositions are built from modified and fragmented field recordings, interwoven with analog synthesis, broken rhythms, rare voice scraps and modulated tape. In addition to her solo project, she regularly hosts art and music events at various venues, foremost at the Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg. Since 2019, she co-curates the Papiripar Festival, together with Felix Kubin and Florian Bräunlich. As a DJ, her waywardly sound spans from musique concrète, early electronics, polyrhythems to synth wave, industrial, downtempo and weird techno.

CILIA

CILIA
Nina Kuttler and Louis d’Heudières are artists living in Hamburg. Motivated by ecological awareness and a sense of interconnectedness between species, time, self and others, they serve sonic soups of introspection and decomposition that combine spoken text, mangled electronics and songs coaxed from an orchestra of household objects.

Neil Luck (uk)

NEIL LUCK (uk)
Neil Luck’s music wallows in the pathos of being a human in a technological world. He will present a solo set for voice, leaves, stones, and other rural foliage developed whilst living in the forests of Baden-Württemberg. Working as a composer, performer and director, Neil has written for a range of soloists and ensembles in the UK and abroad, and presented work at music venues, festivals and galleries internationally including the ICA, Kings Place, Whitechapel Gallery, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, LSO St. Lukes, BBC Cut&Splice festival, in Lithuania and Denmark as part of their Capital of Culture celebrations, the Tokyo Experimental Festival, and on BBC Radio 3. He is the founder of the music-theatre ensemble ARCO, and co-founder of squib-box alongside Adam de la Cours and Federico Reuben.

LAURIE TOMPKINS (uk)
Laurie Tompkins is a UK composer, performer and co-founder and co-director of the Slip label. From scores for samples, instruments and voices he creates a grabbable music that dreams and confounds. Bodies, things, words, and sounds strain under duress, looping their way through scenes of grubby presence, not-quite riff, mouldy echo, and swollen bombast. His spring 2022 releases on Entr’acte, 33-33 and Hyperdelia are a thick, unruly soup of keys and computer with pianist Eliza McCarthy; a desperate suite of consoling, tanked songs with takes from Jess Hickie-Kallenbach, Teresa Winter, Gwilly Edmondez and videos by Joel Wycherley; and some dilated rotten soul with Eliza and Ashley Paul.
