Upstream #3: Alexandra Spence, Nika Son, Yes Indeed

Upstream Concert Series for New Music and Performance

3 - DETRITUS

Upstream's September edition combines artists from Australia and the UK with Hamburg-based artist Nika Son for an evening dedicated to the idea of DETRITUS. We are taken from homemade instruments made from discarded materials (Alexandra Spence) to the creative potential of hypnotic and scattered states induced by insomnia (Son) to a chaotic affirmation of detritus as fertile ground for pushing music into new spaces (Yes Indeed).

Alexandra Spence

Alexandra Spence is a sound artist and musician living on unceded Wangal land in Sydney, Australia. Through her practice Alex attempts to reimagine the intricate relationships between the listener, the object, and the surrounding environment as a kind of communion or conversation. Her aesthetic favours field recordings, analogue technologies and object interventions. Alex has presented her art and music in Australia, Asia, Europe, and North America including BBC Radio; Ausland, Berlin; Café Oto, London; EMS, Stockholm; Punkt Festival, Kristiansand; Standards Studio, Milan; AB Salon, Brussels; Radiophrenia Festival, Glasgow; Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid; Sound Forms Festival, Hong Kong; MONO, Brisbane; The Substation, Melbourne; Soft Centre, and Liveworks Festival, with Liquid Architecture, Sydney. She regularly collaborates with MP Hopkins as Banana and has released her music with labels Room40, Longform editions, Mappa, More Mars (Banana) and Canti Magnetici. (She holds the belief that electricity might actually be magic).

Nika Son

Nika Breithaupt alias Nika Son works as a musician, artist, film composer, curator and Dj after graduating in Fine Arts in Hamburg in 2012.

Influenced by Musique Concrète and the outer space of electronic music, her compositions are built from modified and fragmented field recordings, interwoven with analog synthesis, broken rhythms, rare voice scraps and modulated tape.

As a sound artist and film composer she became a dedicated hunter of extraordinary sounds, while experimenting with new and old technologies in music. Sounds of various origin are translated into a very unusual musical language, as if one watches the audible. She appeared on various labels, such as Mmodemm, First Terrace Records, TAL, Sky Walking, Anti-Ghost Moon Ray and her own imprint Noctui.

Her latest album To Eeyore was released on the label Entr’acte in 2020. Alongside her solo concerts, she creates radio pieces, video and sound installations, and has collaborated for many years with various companions, most notably with filmmaker and artist Helena Wittmann and with the musician F#X (C, Cwelle).
Furthermore she hosts regular art and music events at the Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg since 2011 with various international guests (Next Time, Noctuidae). In July 2018 she staged a two-day festival called Eruption, freely based on the musician and video artist Conrad Schnitzler. Since 2019 she is part of the curator team of Papiripar Festival, together with Felix Kubin and Florian Bräunlich.

As a DJ (also under Nikae), her waywardly sound is marked by the outer space of electronic music, spanning from musique concrete, (early) electronics, synth wave, Industrial, Kraut and experimental Techno.

Yes Indeed

Yes Indeed are Laurie Tompkins & Otto Willberg. Live they play keys, bouncing bass and sing over tactile, soulful samples. The music is musty and floaty, delightfully out of place. In 2022 they released 'Rotten Luck' - their first proper album - on Bison. In the UK and EU they have performed at venues including Kunsthalle (Zurich), Cave 12 (Geneva), UH Fest (Budapest), L'Embobineuse (Marseille), The White Hotel (Manchester) and Old Hairdressers (Glasgow). This followed 2021's 'Exorcise' EP, a syrupy trip that Boomkat rightly described as 'really crazy biscuits'. Laurie is a composer and helps run the Slip label, which has recently released CDs on Entr'acte, 33-33 and Hyperdelia. Otto is a bassist, plays in groups with Ashley Paul & Charles Hayward and his great band Historically Fucked recently released an LP on Upset the Rhythm.
